MUAR, Feb 8 (Bernama) -- Muar Member of Parliament Datuk Razali Ibrahim has pledged to assist former National track cyclist Halimah Mohd Janis, 39, who suffered serious injuries in a road accident in Kuala Lumpur on Jan 6.
Razali who is also Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department said Halimah needed assistance to recover from the serious injuries she had suffered in the accident.
"I believe the injuries suffered by Halimah will need a long period of time to recover. Apart from giving her assistance we must also provide her moral support and motivation to help her recover soon," he said after visiting her at her mother's residence in Kampung Parit Raja, here Sunday.
Razali also handed her RM1,000 cash and a hamper to Halimah, 38, who suffered a fracture in her right hand and pelvis and had to undergo two surgeries since the accident at 1.30am on Jan 6.
"GOD willing, we will also seek the assistance of other associations to support Halimah. I will try to get help from Badan Amal dan Kebajikan Tenaga Isteri-isteri (BAKTI).
"We will do everything possible to ease the burden of the former National cyclist who had contributed and sacrificed for the nation," he said adding that during the Parit Jawa Mountain Bike Jamboree 2014 on Feb 14, there would be an initiative to collect donations for her.
The Jamboree has attracted 1,400 local and foreign participants.
Halimah who was part of the Project Jaya 98 and Projek Gemilang 2001, won a silver medal in the 500m and a bronze from the 200m Spring events in the 1997 Jakarta SEA Games.
Four years later at the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games in 2001, she won a silver in the women's 200m and 500m Sprint.
Halimah who is not able to walk, is now resting at her mother's house in Muar, Johor and scheduled to undergo another follow up surgery on Feb 4.
