‘Voice of Malaysian Sports’ Hasbullah Awang dies’

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 12 ― Veteran sports commentator Hasbullah Awang died today from heart complication at the National Heart Institute (IJN), according to media reports.

“[Hasbullah], who has worked as a sports commentator for Astro Arena since January 2014, has breathed his last at medical facility where he had been getting treatment since last week,” news portal Astro Awani reported today.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin hailed the iconic gruff voice as synonymous with Malaysian sports, and said Hasbullah will not be forgotten by local fans.

“Sad to hear news of ‘the voice of Malaysian sports’ death Datuk Hasbullah Awang earlier,” Khairy said in a tweet.

“Generations will remember Datuk Hasbullah Awang's voice. Memories of Malaysia's sporting triumphs and failures intertwined with his commentary,” he added.

Many took to Twitter to express their condolences and well-wishes to his family, just as ‘Hasbullah Awang’ became a trending topic on the site in Malaysia.

Hasbullah was an iconic sports commentator whose career began back in the 1980s, and, according to Astro Awani, peaked in the early 1990s when Malaysian football turned semi-professional.

He was best known for his distinct and colourful football commentary as well as occasional bloopers, but also commentated occasionally on other sports.
