NSC to financially assist family of late para athlete Mohd Azlan

SERDANG: The Youth and Sports Ministry will be giving special financial assistance to the family of national Paralympian Mohd Azlan Mat Lazim who was killed in a road accident at Serdang Raya here on Saturday.

Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said he would instruct the National Sports Council (NSC) to provide all assistance to the late sportsman’s family.

“We have death benefits (scheme) to present to his family. The special incentive for the 2014 Asian Para Games will also be given to the family.

“I will also make a personal donation to the family," he told reporters after paying his last respects to Mohd Azlan at the Serdang Hospital mortuary on Saturday.

Mohd Azlan bagged three gold medals in the men's 100m, 200m and 400m in the T38 category at the Asian Para Games in Incheon, South Korea, last year.

Mohd Azlan, 25, was riding a motorcycle with another para athlete, Farisan Jasna, 26, when they were hit by a van in the 1.45pm accident.

Mohd Azlan died at the scene while Farisan broke her right arm and was being treated at Serdang Hospital.

Khairy described the sportsman as a Paralympic idol after he brought honours to the country in international championships.

“He was recruited into the 2012 NSC Paralympic programme and was identified as a promising star for the World Championships this year and the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

“He was a great athlete and had a bright future. Mohd Azlan was a cheerful and generous person who was always smiling," said Khairy.

Mohd Azlan’s remains was laid to rest at his hometown in Kampung Batu 3, Jalan Air Putih, Kemaman, Terengganu, on Saturday.

Besides clinching the three golds at the Asian Para Games, Mohd Azlan also won two golds in the 100m and 200m in the T36 category at the 2014 Asean Para Games in Naypyitaw, Myanmar.
