KUALA LUMPUR,
Feb 12 ― Veteran sports commentator Hasbullah Awang died today from heart
complication at the National Heart Institute (IJN), according to media reports.
“[Hasbullah],
who has worked as a sports commentator for Astro Arena since January 2014, has
breathed his last at medical facility where he had been getting treatment since
last week,” news portal Astro Awani reported today.
Youth and
Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin hailed the iconic gruff voice as synonymous
with Malaysian sports, and said Hasbullah will not be forgotten by local fans.

“Sad to
hear news of ‘the voice of Malaysian sports’ death Datuk Hasbullah Awang
earlier,” Khairy said in a tweet.
“Generations
will remember Datuk Hasbullah Awang's voice. Memories of Malaysia's sporting
triumphs and failures intertwined with his commentary,” he added.
Many took
to Twitter to express their condolences and well-wishes to his family, just as
‘Hasbullah Awang’ became a trending topic on the site in Malaysia.
Hasbullah
was an iconic sports commentator whose career began back in the 1980s, and,
according to Astro Awani, peaked in the early 1990s when Malaysian football
turned semi-professional.

He was
best known for his distinct and colourful football commentary as well as
