IT was a proud moment for former national cyclist Datuk Ng Joo Ngan when his daughter Jillian Ng Siew Mei was adjudged one of the top students in the matriculation programme at the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS).

Joo Ngan, who had represented Malaysia in many international competitions, said he was suprprised with Siew Mei’s excellent results in studies as well a sports.

“I was not the studious type during my younger days. I had devoted my time to cycling. But my daughter had proven otherwise. I was overwhelmed by emotions when she went on stage to receive her scroll,’’ said Joo Ngan.
Well done: Noor Hasliza Md Ali (left) receiving her certificate from Jalaludin while Marina watches.

He also disclosed that he had encouraged Siew Mei to take up cycling. But his wife Datin Nancy Teoh was against the idea.

“My wife was afraid that my daughter will sustain injuries while cycling. That’s the reason why Siew Mei opted for synchronised swimming. After seeing her progress in synchronised swimming, I do not have any reason to complain.

“She has made us proud and we are happy,’’ said Joo Ngan.
Siew Mei, who is pursuing a event management course at the Taylors University College in Kuala Lumpur, was a student at the BJSS for eight years. The 19-year-old Siew Mei, who has represented Malaysia in the 2006 Doha Asian Games as well as the 2007 World championships, said she enjoyed her stay in the BJSS.
“I joined the BJSS when I was in Form One. The teachers were very helpful. Without their guidance, I don’t think I could have excelled in my studies and sports.

“I was able to divide my time between synchronised swimming and studies,’’ said Siew Mei.

Besides Siew Mei, badminton player Michelle Yeow Mei Zi, athlete Phang Hua Mei, synchronised swimmer Lee Zhien Huey and artistic gymnast Nabihah Ali were ranked among the top students.

Passed with flying colours: (from left) Nabihah Ali, Katrina Wong Suen Nee, Jillian Ng Siew Mei and Phang Hua Mei.

“Now you all have another journey to continue. I would like to see all you students do well in university,’’ said Chin.

Former national quartermiler Sean Paul was also present at the ceremony. He shared his experience with the students.
“There is no short cut to success in sports and studies. You have to overcome the odds to excel in both,’’ said Paul.

James Selvaraj Appointed BAM High Performance Director

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- Former national shuttler and coach Datuk James Selvaraj has been appointed Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) High Performance Director, announced BAM president Datuk Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh.

Mohd Nadzmi said Selvaraj, who is also Senior Manager of Bata Marketing Sdn Bhd, was the best candidate for the post, not only because of his background in the sport but also for his vast experience in management.

"Datuk James brings together with him a wealth of experience in the sport of badminton.

"He has represented the country as a player and coach. He also has vast experience in management and thus making him the most suitable candidate for this very important post," said Mohd Nadzmi in a statement here Friday.

He said Selvaraj would begin his work on Sept 1, working with BAM Coaching and Training Committee, coaches and players, in all aspects of the national team's high performance programme, including national training and coaching programmes.

"In view of this, BAM hopes to produce success as demonstrated by podium performances at World Championship and Major Games and the development of a strong, sustainable feeder system through which the next generation of champions will be produced," he said.

Selvaraj was a former national shuttler during the late 1970s. Among his achievements were a bronze medal in the 1977 Sea Games in Kuala Lumpur, runner-up in the 1976 Thomas Cup in Bangkok and a bronze medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton.

Meanwhile, in the same statement, Nadzmi said BAM had decided to increase incentives for players or pairs who emerged champion in the BWF World Championships in Paris, held from Aug 23-29, from RM30,000 to RM50,000.

"This is to give additional encouragement and also to serve as a reminder to all players that BAM is always ready to motivate and provide increased incentives for winning major events," he said.

Kenali Legend : Azizul Abu Haniffah

Gua rase ramai kot dah lupe kat die ni.

No. 12 (Azizul Abu Haniffah)

Pantang no. 12 semue deme nak sambor. Karier awal azizul bermula sekitar lewat 1980'an dan kemuncak karier bermula pade zaman semi-pro.

barisan depan dari kiri... shebby singh, (?), subadron aziz, p. ravindran, chow siew wai, k. ravichandran (?), see kim seng, lim teong kim, naina mohd

Skuad Negara 1983 President South Korea Cup , (duduk tengah) Azizul Abu Haniffah
